Back Pain Q & A

What causes back pain?

Back pain is the most common kind of pain and has numerous causes. Some of the most common are:

  • Sports injuries
  • Trip-and-fall injuries
  • Chronic conditions like osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Herniated discs
  • Pinched nerves
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Osteoporotic fractures

Back pain usually happens because of damage to the tissues or bones in your spine. Whether it’s trauma due to injury, wear-and-tear, years of poor posture, or some other type of damage, back pain can be debilitating if you don’t get the appropriate care.

How is back pain diagnosed?

Back pain diagnosis usually includes a physical exam, medical history, symptom evaluation, and imaging tests.

You typically have an X-ray to check for bone fractures, spinal deformities, and other issues. In addition, you may need an MTI, CT scan, or other advanced tests to evaluate the nerves, discs, and other soft tissues in your spine.

The practice also offers a procedure called a discogram to precisely locate the source of your pain. The procedure tests the pain response in the spinal discs, allowing Dr. Enty to pinpoint the exact place your pain comes from so he can treat your issue accurately.

How is back pain treated?

Because back pain differs with each condition that causes it, there are many treatment approaches.

Generally, Dr. Enty starts with conservative options, but he can perform highly advanced integrative pain medicine procedures if you need them. Common treatments include:

  • Epidural steroid injections: inflammation-reducing corticosteroids
  • Nerve blocks: injections to numb painful nerves
  • Sympathetic chain blockades: injections in the nerves in the front of the spine
  • Rhizotomy (radiofrequency ablation): deactivates a painful nerve using heat
  • Neuroablation: deactivates a painful nerve with chemicals
  • Spinal cord stimulation: implanted device that disrupts pain signals
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): injections of healing factors from your blood
  • Human tissue allograft (HTA): injections of donated amniotic fluids
  • Nucleoplasty: surgical removal of disc tissue to ease pressure

Genesis Pain and Regenerative Medicine offers the full scope of pain management treatments. Whether you need a more conservative or highly specialized approach, Dr. Enty can help you overcome your back pain for good.
